Aquaculture booming worldwide
農業(agriculture)ならぬ、アメリカ カリフォルニアでの水産養殖(aquaculture)についての話。海にいきる野生の魚の数は、今日では過去と比べて半分もしくは半分にも満たない数になってしまったという。生態系保全とともに、魚の食料としての供給を確保していくためにもファーム化していくかが課題であると指摘している。
モニターをしながら、Food Chain(食物連鎖・生態系)を崩してしまわないような
Aquacultureを作ることに注目が集まっている。

冒頭にある一文が印象的だ。
“We must plant the sea and herd its animals,” the late ocean researcher Jacques Cousteau said more than 40 years ago,

海も狩るのではなく、耕すものだと40年前には言われているようだ。

世界でも有数の魚介消費国 日本でも養殖産業は活性化しているとニュースでよく目にするだろう。ウナギ、マグロの天然と養殖という言葉はよく聞く。
最近だと2002年に完全養殖に成功し、市場にも出回っている近大マグロが有名だろう。
